FARM INSURANCE

For over 143 years Brant Mutual has been providing insurance to farm owners in Ontario.

Your Farm Mutual Insurance Policy is comprised of five sections:

  • The "Residential Property" (Homeowners Packages)
  • The "Farm Property" (i.e. Farm Buildings, Equipment, Livestock, Produce etc.)
  • The "Residential Property Limited Coverages" (Residential Property which does not qualify for a Package, i.e. seasonal dwellings, tenanted dwellings, mobile homes)
  • The "Miscellaneous Coverages" (i.e. Personal Articles (Jewellery, Furs) Televisions & Equipment, Watercraft)
  • The "Farm Liability Coverages" (This section includes Farmers' Limited Pollution Liability which is included on all Farm Policies when primary Liability Coverage is purchased, subject to a minimum limit of $500,000. Per incident/$1,000,000. Aggregate).
As in Residential Insurance, Brant Mutual can offer a very attractive package, customized to meet your individual needs.

Facts on your Farm Property Insurance:

  • Your insurance coverage on farm produce, farm machinery and farm livestock are subject to the co-insurance provision. You should carry insurance limits up to at least 80% of the value of this property. Co-Insurance applies separately for farm machinery, farm livestock and farm produce. Our sales representative will answer your questions about how co-insurance applies.
  • Unless "Replacement Cost" coverage has been arranged, any claims will be settled on an "Actual Cash Value" basis. This means that depreciation will be taken into account, in accordance with the age of the damaged property. Replacement cost settlements do not take depreciation into account, provided you actually replace or repair the damaged property.
  • "Deductibles." Most coverages are subject to the policy "deductible provision". In some instances you may be able to lower your premium by buying higher deductibles.
  • "Rebuilding Clause Provision" some buildings may be subject to the rebuilding provision as set out in the policy wording. This clause specifies that you will receive the full amount of any loss payable where the destroyed building is rebuilt within 300 feet of the original site. However, you should be aware that if the building is not rebuilt or if it is rebuilt more than 300 feet from the original site you will receive a specified percentage of the amount Of loss payable.
  • "Earnings Insurance" goes to work after the damage has been done and everybody has gone home. In the event of an insured loss, what would you do for income to maintain your operation while your barn and other necessities were being restored? "Earnings Insurance" will do for you what your farm operation would have if such an interruption had not occurred. For complete details on "Earnings Insurance" you can contact one of our sales representatives.
  • Your Farm Liability Coverage will protect you from legal liability arising out of injuries to a Third Party Person or damage to a Third Party's property in the course of your personal activities as well as your farm activity. This coverage also includes "Voluntary Medical Payments Coverage" and "Voluntary Property Damage", as described in Residential Insurance. In addition, the following is a brief explanation of some liability coverages which are available with your "Farm Liability Coverage": "Farmer's Limited Pollution Liability - provides liability protection for bodily injury and property damage caused by "pollution incidents" including clean-up and restoration obligations imposed upon you by Ontario's "Spills Bill". Farmer's Tenants Legal Liability - if you rent buildings, you can protect yourself from liability arising out of damages to those buildings caused by fire, smoke or explosion which results from your negligence. You are not normally protected by the owner's insurance. Non-owned Automobile Insurance - you can be held responsible for injuries or property damages caused by your employees' operation of their own automobile while they are working for you. To protect yourself you should have Non-owned Automobile Insurance Coverage.
As stated in Residential Insurance "not all policies are identical, for competitive reasons, policy wordings can vary. The "Farming Industry" has become very commercialized, and it is imperative your commercial interests are properly protected.

We at Brant Mutual have a selection of packages and coverages available for the Farm Industry. Please contact one of our sales representatives today for more information.
